AMBITIONS
To be an environmental engineer and clean up the Environmental Protection Agency; to learn something new every day.
TURN-ONS
Blunt Honesty, Loyalty, Attention to Simple Things (love notes, phone calls just to say hello).
TURNOFFS
Ignorance, Vulgarity, Jealousy, Lack of Independence and Individuality, Homophobia.
PHRASE TO LIVE BY
What is right is not always popular, what is popular is not always right.
I STAND UP FOR
Animal rights, Environmental issues — I want to do what I can to preserve nonhuman species.
MY STRONGEST INFLUENCES
The fierce independence of my mom, my Cherokee ancestry.
MY IDEAL COUPLE
Lauren Bacall & Humphrey Bogart in “The Dark Passage” — the looks they give each other leave no need for words.
Cindy Brown is in the middle of a spirited discussion about the environment and destructive human appetites when temptation turns her pretty head. Six Hell’s Angels roar up on Rose Avenue, rattling the open windows of the cafe where we sit, just off the beach in Venice, California. “Oh my God,” Cindy exclaims, her eyes suddenly gleaming. “I want a Harley real bad!” What? A gas-guzzling vestige of our unenlightened past? “Oh man!” she says, immediately launching into a new story. “I was sitting at Johnny Rockets on Melrose Avenue one night, and this woman drove up solo on a Harley. That’s supposed to be a man thing. Everybody gave her respect right away. I’m constantly looking for a way to do things that women aren’t supposed to do.”
In another day and age, this extraordinary girl-next-door might have been an outlaw or a revolutionary. Raised on a small farm in the desert town of Boron, California, two hours north of Los Angeles, she threw a broccoli stalk into the family works when, at 15, she became a vegetarian.

AMBITIONS
To be an actress and win an Oscar — same old thing! But most of all, to be happy!
TURN-ONS
Men with long hair, cowboy boots, leather, snuggling, SEX!!
TURNOFFS
Traffic, busy signals on the telephone, indecision, rain, people who lie.
IF YOU SEE ME
Dancing at a club in Hollywood - don’t come up and grab me like you know me! Talk to me. Take your time. . . .
IF YOU KNEW ME
You’d know I’m a girl who’s country sweet and city smart.
THE MAN I LOVE IS
Beautiful to look at, great to talk with, WILD IN BED.
MY WORST NIGHTMARE
Going out without make-up.
FAVORITE BED TREATS
Having my toes sucked!
For the first two decades of her life, Cheryl Bachman stayed around her home town. Jacksonville, Florida, had everything she wanted as a kid — sun and beaches, family and friends. She bounced between her mom’s house in town and the suburban home nearby where her older sister was starting her own family. The two strong women — Cheryl counts them as her “best friends in the whole world” — encouraged the pretty baby of the family to get out and make something of her life. “They kept telling me that if I sat around, nothing was going to happen. They knew I could do anything I wanted to do if I set my mind to it.” They were right. A few months shy of her 21st birthday, Cheryl set mind and body on modeling — leading, she hopes, to an acting career on screens large and small. In short order, the hesitant beauty queen won a local swimsuit pageant and traveled across the peninsular state to compete in the finals.

AMBITIONS
To be the best at whatever it is I’m doing at the time — and someday to teach 1st grade.
TURN-ONS
Deep voices, foreign accents, fun dates, guys with the innocence of 1st graders.
TURNOFFS
Cocky men, loud noises, dishonesty.
FAVORITE AUTHORS
Camus, F. Scott Fitzgerald, J.D. Salinger.
FAVORITE STIMULANT
Strawberry bubble baths.
SELF-DESCRIPTION
I’m very driven and intuitive — when I have a feeling about something, you can bet I’m going to make it happen.
LOVE HINT
Just because I’m independent doesn’t mean I don’t want to be treated like a lady. So open that door for me, mister!
ULTIMATE GOAL
To be the 1st supermodel/1st grade teacher.
College sophomore Holly Joan Hart, an Oakland policeman’s daughter, wows student bodies wherever she goes.
Q:You’re studying education. Why not be a cop like dad?
A: Too stressful. My dad has been shot at. He once had to shoot a pit bull that clamped on to his leg. Teaching school is safer. I want to teach first grade - to mold uncorrupted lives.
Q: And if the kids’ fathers recognize you from Playboy?
A:This is a liberal city. I’m delighted to be Miss April. I want to prove multiethnicity can be beautiful.
Q:You’re Puerto Rican-French-Irish-Colombian-African American?
A:Right. I’m even more multi than Tiger Woods. America is too obsessed with race. I’m proud to be “all of the above.” I’m also proud of surviving a strict Jesuit prep school where the girls had to wear long skirts. Look - no more uniform!

AMBITIONS
To be self-sufficient by working as a model and to travel the world.
TURN-ONS
Weight-training, fast country two-step dancing, guys who really listen.
TURNOFFS
Sitting in one place for too long, clubs and bars.
DREAM VACATION
Italy. I’ve heard it’s the most romantic place in the world.
FAVORITE DRINK
No, not a Texas margarita. I prefer a good PiƱa Colada.
I MUST HAVE
My weekends free. If I can’t have a job with weekends off, then I’m not doing it.
TURN UP THE RADIO FOR
Brooks & Dunn, Travis Tritt, Keith Whitley.
To hear Stacy Sanches talk is to hear pure Texas issuing from the mouth of a babe. Born in Dallas, Stacy relishes her place in the most devotedly nuclear of families, with Mom and Dad sticking together through 32 years of marriage and the whole gang (including a brother and sister) spending time in the family business. She describes the arrangement as “awesome,” but it sounds more like a throwback to a simpler time, when families hung together at home and on the range.
For all of that, Stacy’s not exactly your middle-of-nowhere country girl. But she’s not your typical big-haired Dallas strutter, either. She is an outer-borough type from a burb north of town, and she’s her daddy’s girl. At least when he’s around. “My daddy works his ass off,” Stacy says, showing pride first, then a mischievous smirk. “But he was gone a lot. And sometimes my mom, my sister and I would sneak off to La Bare — one of those strip places that feature men. I was only 14, but they’d let you in with a parent. I don’t think my daddy knows about that to this day.”

Playboy Layla Harvest Roberts

AMBITIONS
To act in the best films of the early 21st century.
TURN-ONS
To turn me on, a man needs to be a good dancer and a good masseur.
TURNOFFS
People who think they are hot shots, substance abusers and black licorice.
ROLE MODELS
Al Pacino, Faye Dunaway and my mother.
FAVORITE FILMS
Dog Day Afternoon, Scarface, Bonnie and Clyde and Last Exit to Brooklyn.
MOOD MUSIC
Elvis Presley, Eartha Kitt, Barry White, Rolling Stones, Joao Gilberto and Antonio Jobim.
FAVORITE PLACE
In Greece it’s so dark at night you can see every star — you feel like part of the galaxy.
PASSIONS
Sex, Rock and Roll and Strawberry Twizzlers.
At 22, Miss October is ready to be noticed. Layla Harvest Roberts grew up in Los Angeles and in Mexico City, where her mother was a famed model. Layla modeled here and in Europe, and last year she made a brief splash on Baywatch. Now movie producers are after her. We cornered her for an intimate talk in Los Angeles.
Q: How did you come by your unusual name?
A: My mother was a bit of a hippie. She thought Harvest sounded pretty. Layla is for the Eric Clapton song — the original, fast version, of course. I’m lucky Mom had good taste in music; I could have been named Chicago Harvest Roberts.
Q: You were a cheerleader at Beverly Hills High. Totally cool?
A: I was overweight and weird. They let me be a cheerleader only because I was a good dancer. Which I still am, by the way

AMBITIONS
The next challenge for me would be to study acting.
TURN-ONS
Nice tans, confidence, honesty, skinny-dipping in the ocean, sex on the beach.
TURNOFFS
I can’t stand obnoxious drunk guys, “macho” men and sugar daddies.
TRAVEL DREAM
I would love to see India and be immersed in what seems to be an exotic, elegant and very different culture.
PHRASE I LIVE BY
Carpe diem — seize the day!
I STAND UP FOR
Animal rights. I have been very active with many animal rights groups fighting animal cruelty, animal testing, fur farming and other essential issues.
I was born horse crazy,” 19-year-old Vanessa Gleason declares, plopping her size-three figure into a seat at a sunny Santa Monica eatery. “I rode seriously from the age of 12 to the age of 16. I did the horse shows. Then I discovered boys, and I had no time for horses!” Horses, boys, surfing, modeling. Lately, the ebullient Mexican American, who grew up on the beach in San Diego, has had many options on her plate, and given her I-can-do-anything attitude, we can’t wait to see what she does next.
Q: Is it still your dream to work with horses?
A: Oh, yeah. I’d love to have my own stable, be a trainer, give riding lessons, compete as an Olympic rider.
Q: And this dream led to animal rights activism?
A: Yes. I used to be hard-core vegan. I belonged to an animal rights group. I resigned because I was tired of people arguing. Plus, I was weak and thin. All I ate were raw foods. I like a round body, you know? With meat on the bones.
